*THE TOLL OF THE SEA (1922) Directed by Chester M. Franklin
Sunday March 7, 12pm
Castro Theatre
$15 SFIAFF Members, $20 General
Unique in movie history as the first feature-length film to be
presented in the early two-strip Technicolor process, THE TOLL OF
THE SEA was written by Frances Marion, one of Hollywood's
pioneering women writers and the first person to win two Oscars
for screenwriting. It made a star of 17-year-old Anna May Wong,
who was the first US-born Asian American to head the cast of a
major Hollywood feature. Wong plays Lotus Flower, the beautiful
Chinese girl seduced and abandoned by her white lover, a
shipwrecked American, in a story acknowledged by Frances Marion
to be "practically the step-daughter of MADAME
BUTTERFLY."
*DANGEROUS TO KNOW: THE CAREER AND LEGACY OF ANNA MAY WONG
Sunday March 7, 1pm
Castro Theatre
Admission included with THE TOLL OF THE SEA ticket purchase
Moderated by B. Ruby Rich, the panel will feature Karen Leong,
author of the soon-to-be-released The China Mystique: Pearl S.
Buck, Anna May Wong, Mayling Soong Chiang, and the Transformation
of American Orientalism; Graham Russell Gao Hodges, author of
Anna May Wong: From Laundryman's Daughter to Hollywood Legend;
the legendary actress Nancy Kwan, star of THE WORLD OF SUZIE WONG
and FLOWER DRUM SONG; and the contemporary actress Jacqueline
Kim, featured in CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES and BROKEDOWN PALACE.
*PICCADILLY (1929) Directed by E.A. Dupont Sunday March 7, 6pm
Castro Theatre
$15 SFIAFF members / $20 general
In 1928 Anna May Wong left Hollywood to make films in Europe; in
PICCADILLY - one of the most expensive and elaborate British
motion pictures of its time - she is mesmerizing as Shosho, the
Chinese scullery maid at a posh London nightclub who overnight
becomes the toast of the town and the object of desire for all
around her.
*PACIFIC FILM ARCHIVE
THE SCARLET LETTER (1927) Directed by Victor Sjöström
Sunday February 29, 2pm
Hawthorne's classic novel, brought to life by Sjöström and
Lillian Gish. Gish's operatic performance here makes her films
with Griffith seem like mere overtures

8. MISCELLANOUS
==============================================================
Locations Needed
From: allpropertyistheft@yahoo.com
I am seeking a list of various locations in or around the Boston
area for a short film written by popular novelist Matthew Stokoe
(Cows, High Life).
The locations we need are; 3 or 4 different rooms, preferrably at
least 15"x15", a butchers' shop or meat market, gloomy
looking basement space (20"x20" preferred).
With the room sets, we are looking for little or no existing
decoration - plain blank walls, no furniture etc. but also need
the option of decorating the sets ourselves, be it with paint or
wallpaper. Once shooting is
completed, the rooms would of course be returned to their
original state.
Should the perfect set be found outside of the Boston area, we
are willing to travel, although we would prefer to minimize costs
and try to restrict shooting to the northern New England area. If
you can help, or know of anyone who can, please drop me a line.
