Opens: April 10
Closes: May 9
Casting: Now
HARD COPY SUBMISSIONS ASAP TO: THE COLONY THEATRE COMPANY
ATTN: THE DRAWER BOY
555 NORTH THIRD STREET
BURBANK, CA 91502
The play takes place on a small farm in central Ontario, Canada in 1972. This is the story of two Canadian farmers, boyhood friends and WW II veterans, who share a mysterious secret. Their lives are comically interrupted when a young actor asks to live with them as "research" for a play about farming. He acts as a catalyst for the farmers to re-examine their lives and unblur the line between myth and reality. By play's end all three have undergone a critical transformation. The play examines themes of friendship, memory vs. truth, storytelling, and the power of theatre to help us remember what is important. Plus it's funny. Time magazine named it "A new classic" and "One of the 10 best plays of 2001."
All 3 actors must have good comic instincts.
[MORGAN] Male 50 - early 60's. A rugged farmer with a sly, dry sense of humor. A strong man of principal with firm convictions who likes to mess with Miles' head. A great storyteller...
[ANGUS] Male 50 - early 60's. Morgan's lifelong friend who has a serious head injury from World War II. He's funny, but doesn't know it. A deeply emotional man with no short term memory whatsoever who develops a thirst for the truth about his past...
[MILES] Male 20's. A quirky young actor and aspiring playwright with no knowledge of rural ways. Curious, uninhibited, desperate to fit in, he's a fish-out-of-water. Miles eventually stands up to Morgan and develops a deep attachment to Angus...
The award-winning Colony Theatre Company is Burbank's premiere professional theatre and was named one of "25 Notable US Theatre Companies" by Encyclopedia Britannica's 2004 Almanac. For more information, visit our website www.colonytheatre.org

Film Bay Area Meeting Reminder and neighborhood info drive
Two agenda points in this email. The first is to remind you that the next meeting of the Alliance is this Thursday, Feb 19th, 6:30pm in the City council chambers at Oakland City Hall. The second agenda point. Both Michael Billington of the San Francisco Film Office and Ami Zins of the Oakland Film Office are compiling data to determine how many production related people live within those respective cities. This data will help these Film offices when they have to go to their local City Governments to ask for support. Your participation in this endevour is especially important because of the budget cutbacks that every city in California is facing. If you live in either San Francisco or Alameda county, please take a moment of your time and email Ami or Michael with your name, address, and phone number. Your info will be safeguarded.
If you live in Alameda county, address your email to oakland@filmoakland.com
If you live in San Francisco County, address your email to michael.billington@sfgov.org
IMPORTANT; In the "Subject" line, please put the word "Neighborhood". Also, if you could pass this email out to other production related personnel who are not on this email group, it would help both Michael's and Ami's efforts.
I look forward to seeing each and every one of you on Thursday evening.
All my best,
Sean House

SF Final Cut Pro Users Group
Greetings from Berlin! I´m here for the Berlin International Film Festival, where our film "Quality of Life" premiered. Lots of films edited with FCP here, including Mario Van Peebles´ latest film, "Gettin´the Man´s Foot Outta Your Baadasssss!" On Thursday, I had the good fortune of attending Walter Murch´s lecture on editing sound and music for films. Our next meeting is Wednesday, February 25th, at 7pm.This month we're meeting at Dimension 7 at 150 Folsom Street. Cross street is Fremont. There will be a $5 door charge. Our meeting will kick off at 7pm with a tech Q & A, followed by show & tell. Bring your work on DVCAM or mini-dv, and please limit your clips to 2 minutes.
Wes Plate from Automatic Duck is coming to town to talk about his product line. He´ll be giving an overview of their products and demonstrate how to translate sequences from your FCP project so that you can open them in After Effects and or on any Avid. He will also be showing their newest plug-in for converting from Avid to FCP. Pierre Jasmin from RE:Vision,Effects(www.revisionfx.com) will be showing how, Twixtor,, FieldsKit and ReelSmart Motion Blur address multiple, video formatting problems related to converting between different frame rates, deinterlacing, 3:2 pulldown and achieving a higher quality look while performing these tasks.
Jim Tierney from Digital Anarchy will be showing off a new bundle of plugins called Anarchy FCP. This combines their newly improved text tools with some new effects, including a custom blur effect, glowing edges, animatable noise, seamless tiling, and more. They'll also be demoing their ReTimer plugin and more. All three companies are generously donating product for our raffle, so you will definitely want to stay until the end.

NEXT LAFCPUG MEETING
Next meeting of the lafcpug will be Wednesday, February 25 at the LA Film School in Hollywood beginning at 6:45PM (doors open at 6:00PM.) It will be ½Motion Graphics and Effects Night where we will talk about and show about,uh... Motion Graphics and Effects.
Agenda is currently being set but so far hereðs a sneak peak.
Scheduled to appear will be Alex Lindsey from dvGarage who will talk about what you need to know about Visual Effects BEFORE you shoot your movie. Heðll be covering the topics Photogrammetry, Blue/Gree Screen keying, HDRi lighting, Matchmoving and more.
Also scheduled to appear (pending confirmation of his schedule) will be Kevin (Telly) Monahan who will show tips and tricks from his book, (shipping February 20) ½Motion Graphics and Effects in FCP.
Agenda will be set about a week before meeting so keep checking the Next Meeting page http://www.lafcpug.org/user_schedule.html

****This past Saturday Walter Murch wrote me that he would love to come to the lafcpug and speak about using FCP to edit the movie “Cold Mountain.” at the next meeting, Feb 25. Well, damn if I was gong to turn him down. Anyway I thanked Mr. Murch for honoring us with his presence, adjusted the agenda immediately to make room for him, and then like a mad chicken, began searching for a larger venue figuring the LA Film School (330 seats) might prove to be to small to accommodate all of you who might wish to attend. As of this writing I have yet to find a larger venue that is available or affordable as those that are available are not affordable, and those that are affordable are not available. Isn’t that just like life?

So as of this moment, we will still meet at the LA Film School on a first come first seated basis and once the seats are filled, that's it. Doors close, and there will be NO chance you will get in unless you are on the or you’re my Mom. It has to be this way as I am personally responsible for complying with Fire and Safety Laws and your safety is more important than a seat.

If you can provide a venue for free or cheap, contact Michael Horton
"HeadCutter" at michaelh@lafcpug.org ****

BATTLE OF ALGIERS
The Most Imporatnt Film of 2004!
First Time in the Bay Area
This film is as relevant today as it was in 1965!
"Re-creating the carnage of fifties Algeria-bombings, assassinations,
police torture The Battle of Algiers is as relevant today as it was in
1965." NY TIMES
Format: Black and white, French & Arabic w/ Subtitles Director: Gillo Pontecorvo, 117 mins.
The most electrifyingly timely movie playing was made in
1965. Gillo Pontecorvo's The Battle of Algiers is famous and it was privately screened in August 2003 for military
personnel by the Pentagon as a field guide to fighting terrorism. Former national-security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski volunteered this blurb: "If you want to understand what's happening right now in Iraq, I recommend the Battle
of Algiers." I wonder if these politicos are aware that Pontecorvo's epic was once used by the Black Panthers
as a training film? In fact, not much in the current Iraq situation is historically comparable to the late-fifties Algerian
struggle for independence dramatized in The Battle of Algiers, but its anatomy of terror remains unsurpassed- NY

Feb. 22nd Sunday 7:00p.m. at the Schulman.
Bigfoot - The Unknown Territory
Join us for a unique evening with Film maker Karl Kozak on SUNDAY, February 22, 7p.m. at the Schulman Auditorium at the Carlsbad Dove Library.
The Schulman Auditorium is located in the Carlsbad DOVE Library
1775 Dove Lane (at El Camino Real) in Carlsbad. Map (just across the parking lot from the La Costa Ultra Theater.)
This is a 'fine cut' screening which is the step a producer goes through before the film is "locked". The purpose of this screening is to get honest, direct audience feedback for final edit recommendations.
FIRST 40 TICKETS ARE FREE!, AFTER THAT TICKETS ARE $5.00
Combining humor and horror, suspense and adventure, Bigfoot - The Unknown Territory will appeal to all ages and demographic groups. Though necessarily depicting the results of violent events, the film is far from being a “slasher flick.”
It will be a great “date movie,” a family, popcorn-eating film, and a favorite of the midnight video store crowd.
Its appeal to foreign audiences should be exceptional, mingling, as it does, four stories into one superb plot centered on the mystifying and internationally celebrated legend of Bigfoot.

GREGG BIERMANN'S MATERIAL EXCESS
Gregg Biermann In Person
Gregg Biermann’s feature-length digital video MATERIAL EXCESS uses supermarket coupons, catalogs, flyers and advertising inserts to pierce through the glossy surface of all manner of printed matter and find a frenetic and visceral currency of cultural excess. Borrowing its three-part structure from Dante’s THE DIVINE COMEDY (INFERNO, PURGATORY and PARADISE), the mesmerizing pastiche of MATERIAL EXCESS presents a troubling and fascinating odyssey through the bubbling cauldron of modern commercialism. Steve Bartoo writes, “MATERIAL EXCESS isn’t exactly a rejection of materialism… It's a difficult, frequently funny, and ultimately humane discourse on humanity’s primary intellectual activity.”

ARMENIAN FILM FESTIVAL
Delancy Street Theatre
600 Embarcadero (at Townsend)
The Armenian Film Festival includes films and videos with Armenian themes from filmmakers in Armenia and throughout the worldwide diaspora. The unique, topical works in this festival range from narrative to experimental, documentary to fiction, features to shorts, all made by filmmakers in the Middle East, Europe and North America. Rather than focusing on historical or contemporary canonical filmmakers such as Bek-Nazarian, Paradjanov or Pelechian, programs highlight current pieces that reveal a surprising breadth of approaches and issues relevant to the current moment. Across formal and geographical differences, recognizable themes of displacement, loss, memory, trauma, and recognition emerge. Experimental works include Hrayr Anmahouni's TEBI GYANK, Serge Avedikian's LIGNE DE VIE, Nigol Bezjian's ROAD FULL OF APRICOTS and Vardan Hakopian's THE DUDUK.
